Genealogy/History Room

Located on the second floor of the New Castle Public Library, the collection in the History Room includes family histories, standard reference works, county histories of Pennsylvania, and other genealogical material.

The New Castle Public Library is proud of its collection of genealogical materials. The collection is especially strong in Pennsylvania census records and local family histories.

IMPORTANT NEW INFORMATION REGARDING GENEALOGY SERVICES

Patrons can request articles and obituaries either by mail, phone, or email to the library. Requested information will then be sent to the patron via mail.

The library will charge a minimum service charge of $5, plus $1 for each additional page. So if a patron requests 1 page of information, the charge would be $5. Two are $6, three are $7, four are $8, 5 at $9, etc. An invoice will be sent with the information; payment should be returned with the invoice to the library’s business office.

"If you don't know history, you don't know anything. You're a leaf that doesn't know it's a part of a tree." Michael Crichton.

Microfilm

Microfilm machines are available for public use. Copies are now $.50 per page.

Marriage/Obituary Database

Volunteers are working hard to enter marriage announcement and obituary dates from the New Castle News. We have entered all of the obituaries since the start of the newspaper in 1880, in addition to other New Castle newspapers over the years.

**Please note that dates are not necessarily the date of marriage or death. Consult the actual announcement to get complete information.**

Information By Mail

The Information Services staff will do LIMITED genealogical research or requests for obituaries by the mail. The fee for this service is determined by the amount of time needed to perform the search. Information on more than one person can be included in each request.

**You will be billed for the research when the information is sent to you, or you will be notified as to the charge.**

If you use this service, please give as much information about the person(s) that you are searching, such as spouse, dates, location, etc. This helps us to verify that we have the correct person or family. The more information you can provide, the better the chances that we can provide you with the information you need.

If you would like a copy of the obituary, please include your regular mail address. This will help fill your request sooner.

Search the New Castle News...and other historical newspapers

If you wish to search the Newspaper Archive database from the library, please ask the Genealogy staff. If you wish to have access from home, you can visit the Newspaper Archive and pay for a subscription by month or year.

The New Castle News may still be viewed on microfilm.
